Imagine the freedom to live your life without the need for glasses or contact lenses. LASIK could be the procedure that gives you that freedom.

LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) surgery is a common and safe procedure that uses a state-of- the-art excimer laser to gently and with great precision correct refractive problems by actually sculpting the cornea into a new and more perfect form. The three primary conditions that are being treated with LASIK are Myopia (near-sightedness), Hyperopia (far-sightedness), and Astigmatism (asymmetrical cornea).

Candidates for LASIK surgery are generally people over 18 years of age who have had a relatively stable lens prescription for a year or more and who are free of other eye-related medical problems. To find out if you are a candidate for this life-changing procedure, contact Dr. Michael Drinnan of Peninsula Eye Physicians at (650) 342-7474.

Some Frequently Asked Questions regarding LASIK surgery

How safe is LASIK surgery?

While you should always review the risks and benefits of any surgical procedure with your doctor, LASIK surgery has proven over time to be a very safe and effective procedure.

Does it hurt?

The procedure is performed using a topical anesthetic (eye drops) which numbs the eye, so there is no pain. The laser instrument that the surgeon uses also causes no pain or discomfort. Often there is a mild burning sensation following the procedure, which generally subsides after a few hours.

Are the results permanent?

The results of the LASIK surgery are permanent, though a person's eye can change over time. That is why the procedure is not recommended for people under 18 years of age whose eyes can still be changing quickly.

Is LASIK experimental?

No, LASIK has been successfully performed in the United States with excellent results since 1991, and is now the most commonly performed refractive surgery. Ophthalmologists have been reshaping the cornea using more traditional surgical methods for over 50 years, and using the excimer laser since the 1980's.

Will my eyes look different after LASIK surgery?

No, this procedure does not change the appearance of the eyes in any way.

How long is the recovery period from this procedure?

One of the great benefits of LASIK surgery is the rapid visual recovery - a majority of patients will achieve the desired result within a day. Vision can continue to improve over a period of months, and, if necessary, enhancements to the surgery can be done.

How soon can I resume my regular schedule?

Most people will be able to drive and return to work 1-2 days following the procedure, though some occupations requiring intense clarity of vision may take a little longer. Consult with your physician for any specific activities that should be avoided for longer periods, such as swimming, water sports or exposure to direct sunlight.
